Three exhibitions in June

NEWS | 31-05-2021
Throughout June, the Philharmonic exhibition spaces will be open to visitors. During this time, visitors will be able to see three exhibitions "Der Mensch liegt in größter Pein", "Synthesis 2021" and "How does Szczecin sound?"

"Man is in the greatest pain"

The exhibition is a show of selected works from the collection of the Zachęta Contemporary Art Collection in Szczecin juxtaposed with texts from Gustaw Mahler's musical works.

The phenomenon of the composer in European culture is an attitude completely devoid of conventions. Mahler was characterized by the lack of moderation, immoderation and extravagance. In his work he consciously and eclectically combined contradictions, past and future, trivial with pathetic, dark with sweet, subtle with kitsch. Above all, however, he wove a literary thought that was characterized by exaggerated fumbling with feelings, "guts", incurable melancholy and an obsessive fear of death. About his work, Leonard Bernstein wrote in 1967 that "his music is like a camera, capturing society at the time of the initial study of collapse."

The title of the exhibition "Der Mensch Liegt In Größter Pein!" ("Man Lies in Pain") was taken from the text of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 and poses a question about the emotions of a lonely man and fear of the senseless violence of the universe. The present day of "enlightened cynicism" distances itself from them, treating them as pretentious and sometimes embarrassing, adopting the values of the strength of ruthless post-capitalism or coaching strategies that see fluctuations as an expression of weakness

However, the exhibition does not intend to translate music and words into the world of painting. Synesthetically, he juxtaposes texts from the beginning of the 20th century – the century of psychoanalytic couches, with the dilemmas of the 21st century full of new doubts about technological, cultural and existential changes.

We would like to invite you to a glorifying journey through emotions and paradoxes stretched between the world of visual arts, poetry and music!

The exhibition will be open to visitors on the following days and hours:

The Association for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art was registered and was established in 2004. The impulse for its establishment was the National Culture Program "The signs of time", announced in 2004, which was a reaction to the many years of discontinuity in collecting contemporary art in Poland. Since then, the consistently built Regional Collection of Zachęta of Modern Art in Szczecin has become one of the largest and most valuable collections of contemporary works in this part of Poland.

" Synthesis 2021 – Happy Accidents"

In September 2021, Greece will host the international SYNTHESIS 2021 exhibition presenting student works and projects prepared by educators from many research centers around the world. The selection of works for this exhibition is currently underway. Meanwhile, the works of the curators and organizers of this event are presented in the Gallery at the Orthodox Church and in the Szczecin Branch of SARP. These are works in the field of artistic graphics, interdisciplinary design, also with the use of new media and, of course, in the field of interior design – says Dr. Dominika Zawojska-Kuriata, the curator of the exhibition. Through creativity, we want to present the curators and organizers of the SYNTHESIS 2021 event, i.e. people who will soon select works submitted to the September international exhibition.

The exhibition is therefore a kind of warm-up before what is going to be in the autumn. The SYNTHESIS 2021 – Happy Accidents event is an extended continuation of the international exhibition Arch Inside, the previous editions of which were very successful. The event itself allowed the dissemination of projects that are created at many faculties of art universities from Poland and abroad. The event took place, among others in Greece, Norway and Poland – at the Philharmonic in Szczecin, the Zamek Culture Center in Poznań, the University of Arts in Poznań, the Academy of Art in Szczecin. This year's edition changes its name due to the balanced participation of works in the field of architecture and graphics, thus the Graphics Departments become co-organizers of the event. This year's theme is Happy Accidents, the role of chance in design and art.

The exhibition will be open for the visitors in the following days:

Gallery at the Orthodox Church

• 02.06 Wednesday – 3:00-5:00 PM

The exhibition is open from 3:00 – 5:00 PM and the entrance is for free.
At 7.00 PM the official closure of the exhibition is planned finisaż, na który obowiązują zaproszenia.

How does Szczecin sound? "

Young and adult artists working in the art groups of the Polish Association of the Deaf – West Pomeranian Branch will take us to the world of emotions and feelings they have painted. The world where sound is only the domain of the imagination. Some of the works are literal – we will see the sea shore, people hurrying down the street, buildings and parks. Others will require us to use our imagination to to see the Szczecin wind or feel a handshake.

Witold Lutosławski claimed that man was deprived of one of the elementary rights – the right to silence. This right is not protected by the acts of law, nor it is recognized by the people themselves in their daily conduct. So what is the city in the absolute silence? What pays attention then?

Extremely suggestive images will allow us to look at reality in a different way, in which neither good nor bad sound exists. As people who are working and visiting the philharmonic – the temple of music, it is not easy to imagine the world deprived of voice. Every day, however, we experience different kinds of deafness – when we pass by something blankly, when we lack the time for important things, when we do not want to think about something. That is why the proverb says that the most deaf is the one who refuses to listen.

So this is the occasion when we can stand in silence and give ourselves the guidance to those for whom silence is the obviousness. Are we able to learn to appreciate good sounds?

The exhibition will be open to visitors on the following days and hours:
