Clearing
On the Moment, the Gaze, Light, and Encounter

Clearing is a word that, much like an image itself, cannot be exhausted by a single meaning. It resonates with the German Lichtung, denoting a place of revelation or opening; the English glimpse, suggesting a fleeting act of perception; and interstice, the space in between, familiar both to architecture and to reflections on space and experience. Each of these concepts emphasises a different aspect – light, a fissure, a moment, or a relationship. Clearing seems to embrace them all.

It is a momentary opening. It appears between trees, within the structure of matter, in the play of light. A single opening is enough to alter our perspective and invite us to look further.
Art works in much the same way. A painting does not always reveal itself at once. Its meaning may emerge only in a later encounter, when we return to it with eyes changed by time and experience. It does not offer a complete image of reality or ready-made answers. Instead, it allows us to see the world through another person’s gaze, becoming a vessel for their sensitivity, memory, and experience.

The exhibitions presented throughout this season do not form a single narrative. What unites them is the conviction that an image cannot be exhausted by a first glance, nor reduced to a single interpretation. Rather than leading to definitive conclusions, each exhibition invites us to pause, to linger, and to look again.

Perhaps this is the horizon they ultimately share – not a similarity of themes or artistic language, but the belief that an image becomes a place of encounter: with memory, with light, with landscape, with another person, and sometimes with our own way of seeing.

In a world that increasingly demands certainty, immediate judgement, and rapid interpretation, such moments of stillness seem especially precious. Perhaps it is within these clearings-these brief moments of attentive perception-that the deepest meaning of our encounter with art is revealed.

Opening Hours and Tickets

The galleries’ opening hours:
Saturdays: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. (last entry at 3:30 p.m.)
Sundays: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. (last entry at 3:30 p.m.)

Tickets are available for PLN 10 at the box office, from the ticket machine and on the Philharmonic’s website: filharmonia.szczecin.pl. Free admission for children under 10 and people with disabilities.

Concertgoers can visit both galleries free of charge one hour before the concert, during intermissions, and half an hour after the concert ends.
