Guided tour of the Dominican Monastery Prenzlau in Polish

NEWS | 27-08-2024
As part of the "Culture Without Borders" project we warmly encourage you to visit our Museum, which is located in the Dominican Monastery in Prenzlau. To overcome language barriers, the monastery has prepared guided tours in Polish.
The former monastery is currently the cultural centre of the city. Here, you can attend concerts, theatrical performances, and lectures, celebrate festivals, and spend time in the library or conduct research in the archives.

In the Historical-Cultural Museum, you can learn about the region's history and the building itself over the centuries. During the tour, you will surely be delighted by the architecture of one of the best-preserved monasteries in northeastern Germany and its high-quality exhibits. The richly restored cloisters, refectory with wall paintings, and chapel are the main elements of medieval monastery architecture. The northern wing was recently renovated in a modern, contrasting style.

The permanent exhibition presents a rich collection of medieval objects, especially sacred sculptures, important archaeological finds from the Seehausen monastery, and items from legal history, such as the severed hands of two mayors of Prenzlau sentenced for treason. Newer parts of the exhibition focus on the city's history, examining its flourishing era in the 19th century and the turning point in 1945. The history of subsequent periods is presented during special exhibitions. A separate room is dedicated to the classical landscape painter and friend of Goethe, Jakob Philipp Hackert, and Prussian Queen Friederike Luise, both born in Prenzlau.
