His bold, provocative, and instantly recognizable style revolutionized the worlds of fashion and portraiture, making him one of the most sought-after photographers of his time. Newton’s ability to tell complex visual stories in a single frame continues to inspire contemporary artists and shape modern photography.
The HELMUT NEWTON. MUSIC & PORTRAITS exhibition offers a captivating journey across decades and continents, from Berlin to Paris, Milan to Monaco, Los Angeles to New York. It brings together portraits of legendary musicians alongside vintage exhibition posters that highlight the breadth of Newton’s illustrious career.
The intersection of music and photography
Music and photography share a unique connection, and Helmut Newton masterfully captured the energy, charisma, and mystique of some of the greatest musical icons. His portraits of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Luciano Pavarotti, and Sting showcase his extraordinary ability to reveal the personality and essence of his subjects.
Among the highlights of the exhibition is a portrait of Luciano Pavarotti, taken in Monte Carlo in 1993 for Vanity Fair. This intimate image captures the opera legend in a moment of deep concentration just before stepping onto the stage. Also featured is an iconic portrait of Sting, photographed in Milan, depicting the artist reclining on a hotel bed with a clarinet at his side. The exhibition also includes striking images of Juliette Gréco, June Anderson, Carla Bruni, David Lee Roth, Malcolm McLaren, and Willy De Ville, each portrait offering a glimpse into the world of music through Newton’s lens.
A unique setting for an iconic exhibition
The choice of the Szczecin Philharmonic as the exhibition venue enhances the synergy between Newton’s work and the world of music. Designed by award-winning architects Alberto Veiga and Fabrizio Barozzi, the Philharmonic’s stunning contemporary space, recipient of the Mies van der Rohe Award, provides an inspiring backdrop for Newton’s extraordinary portraits.
Newton’s influence extends far beyond photography; his images have become a defining element of contemporary visual culture. The Helmut Newton Foundation, established in 2003, continues to celebrate his legacy by curating exhibitions around the world, including at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Grand Palais in Paris, Palazzo Reale in Milan, and Fotografiska in Stockholm.
