Following a 10-year-long stay in Denmark, musician and jazz composer, Tomasz Licak returned to his hometown Szczecin. Since 2013 he has run a big band which operates at the Art Academy in Szczecin. The Pomeranian Youth Big Band set up by Licak is both energy and experience. Just like Scandinavian youth big bands, this orchestra is made up of pupils, students and professional musicians.
During the concert at the Philharmonic, along with the classic big band repertoire, the Pomeranian Youth Big Band and guests will present compositions inspired by Polish and Scandinavian folklore. An abundance of folk melodies from both of these regions, so close geographically yet so diverse culturally, will sound in their big band arrangements. Scandinavian traditional folk music is still present in everyday life. Folk melodies, which are on the increase every year, are released among others in a collection Den Danske Sangbog the Danish Song Book.
Tomasz Licak is a graduate of the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense and elite postgraduate studies at Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen. He is also a laureate of many awards: Grand Prix of the 49th edition of the Jazz on the Oder Festival (in Polish: Festiwal Jazz Nad Odrą), which he won as the Tomasz Licak Radek Wośko Quartet feat. Carl Winther. He is also a lecturer at the Art Academy in Szczecin.
