“Gombka F.” is a play based on Witold Gombrowicz’s “Ferdydurke”. The novel is set in a world of insects, with the protagonist Gombka Caterpillar and others: dancers and actors playing insects in the microcosm of the play. The play is accompanied by live music performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Szczecin Philharmonic. The spectacle is intended to help understand one of the most important Polish novels of the 20th century. It is aimed at high school children and carried out as part of the educational project “Gombrowicz’s Musical Mug – the Alternative Matura Exam” which is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
The main character, Caterpillar Gombka F., cannot cope with the issues of entering maturity. When it meets its old teacher, Professor Kupko, it is pushed by him back into school in order to be re-educated. The professor sets in motion his diabolic machine for transforming his pupils into little children again and therefore Gombka becomes the hostage of ubiquitous immaturity. The hope to escape this grotesque situation shatters when an unfamiliar emotion appears.
