Philharmonics play Chamber I Cello dances

"For me, tango has always been more for the ear than for the legs," Astor Piazzolla once said about a genre of dance that immortalized him in the history of music. These words became the inspiration to create the entire program of "dances for the ear" in an outdoor concert taking place on the Walerian Pawłowski Square.

Walerian Pawłowski was one of the most colourful figures of Szczecin's musical life. He was a composer, conductor, columnist, and also for many years he hosted music programs at the Szczecin Philharmonic. To this day, most inhabitants of our city remember him. In private life, he was a fan of photography, boxing and motorcycles. As often as on stage you could meet him in the city, rushing on the silver junak!

What would Walerian Pawłowski say about the program of this concert? Certainly, he would have quoted the cello anecdote colourfully. Originally, the instrument was held by musicians using merely the strengths of their legs. Only a certain A.F. Servais, an artist with a figure that made it impossible to operate the instrument in this way, mounted a foot to his copy. Walerian Pawłowski would also quote Piazzolla's other words: "I don't understand those pseudo-critics who think I killed tango. Quite the opposite – I saved it by performing a true plastic surgery on it!"

Walerian Pawłowski would certainly also listen to the "Visegrad Cello Quartet", parts of which are inspired by the music of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. He would like "Romanian dances" arranged for a cello quartet. In addition to good music, he liked dancing. Thus, "dance for the ear" will perfectly match the sentimental and at the same time joyful atmosphere of the next memorial concert dedicated to Walerian Pawłowski.
