Music that is beautiful, concrete, logical – these are the words Tomasz Konieczny uses to describe the songs of Romuald Twardowski, a Warsaw-based composer and Master under whose guidance Konieczny and Napierała recorded all of them in 2020. The coherence of text and music, continuing the best songwriting traditions, allows Twardowski to write poetry through sounds.
Three Sonnets to Don Quixote were the first notes they took up a few years ago when they started thinking about creating a new concert program. Since then, they have been performing them successfully all over the world. They are equally personally connected with the Sonnets of Michelangelo, to which the Master himself added a dedication for Konieczny. Both musicians eagerly compare and juxtapose the works of Polish composers with earlier pieces by other creators, choosing works perfectly written for bass-baritone. In these compositions, they seek hidden meanings and emotions happening on a spiritual level. They bring out the poetry in the pauses – the silence between the notes.
