Fire, water, air and earth- The Elements in the golden hall

NEWS | 09-06-2021
I Hear Good Sounds festival is gaining momentum and this Friday we will witness how plastic bottles and washing machine drums resonate with the Symphony Orchestra. The symphonic poem The Elements by Paweł Pudło can be heard in the golden hall of the Philharmonic in Szczecin on June 11th at 7.00 p.m. Tickets at the price of PLN 10-20 can be purchased via the website filharmonia.szczecin.pl and at the Philharmonic box office.
The symphonic poem "The Elements”: is a story about the forces of nature that for centuries have created the world around the river. The symbolism of the elements was used because of its universal recognition, simple associations with nature and the possibility of a metaphorical, artistic depiction of the processes taking place in the environment.

The composition refers to the symbolism of the four elements (earth, water, air and fire). The composition uses a symphony orchestra apparatus, folk instruments from Africa and Asia, modern electronic instruments, but also instruments made of rubbish – disposable plastic bottles, packaging or washing machine drums.

The artistic elements of the project are the starting point for discussions on current world problems regarding ecology, recycling, natural resources management, smog and air quality that we all breathe – in a word, conscious functioning of societies in the natural environment today and in the future.

The premiere of the piece took place in 2018 at the Sudeten Philharmonic and Książ Castle. Apart from symphonic instruments, the orchestra also played the instruments recycled from washing machine drums or plastic bottles. Almost 200 people were involved in the creation of the project, including the musicians and academics from the University of Wrocław, and the educational activities accompanying the project were aimed at 500 primary and secondary school students. Paweł Pudło was responsible for the composition, directing and production of the project.

Paweł Pudło is a recognized composer and author of multidisciplinary projects. Since 2005, his music has been broadcast all over the world, and the films and commercials for which he wrote, have been shown in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Israel, Estonia, France and Spain. His works includes orchestral, choral and chamber pieces. He often combines a symphonic cast with electronics and ethnic instruments. He is the music producer of all his songs. As a director and producer, he created such projects as: "Violemi", "Phoenix Cities" and "Elements".

Paweł Pudło's music is performed by outstanding musicians from Poland and the world, including with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Dortmunder Philharmoniker, Florence Opera, Sinfonia de Barcelona, Malaysian Orchestra, the National Philharmonic, the Grand Theater of the National Opera, Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, the National Music Forum and the Polish Baltic Philharmonic.

Half an hour before the concert, feel more than invited to the Philharmonic Symphony Hall, where we will listen to a lecture by Radosław Sieja: "Listen with Demant – about hearing prosthetics".

The Elements concert will take place on Friday, June 11th at 7:00 PM in the golden symphony hall of the Philharmonic. Tickets at the price of PLN 10 – 20 can be purchased via the website filharmonia.szczecin.pl and at the Philharmonic ticket offices.

The concert is part of the I Hear Good Sounds festival. At least one third of Poles of all ages live in excessive noise. It negatively affects our health. It destroys the sensory cells in the inner ear that cannot renew themselves. Hearing deteriorates slowly, reducing the quality of life. Noise also has a negative effect on the nervous system, which is manifested by dizziness and headache, sleep disturbances, increased blood pressure, fatigue. The ongoing Festival is intended to draw attention to this problem, and also show how to choose the sounds that surround us.

The difficult time of isolation was a moment for the Philharmonic to redefine our role, not only as an institution that provides good sounds in the form of concerts, but also as the institution that can inspire and, above all, take up important topics – emphasizes Dorota Serwa, director of the Philharmonic in Szczecin.
