Vernissage of Leszek Szurkowski and Ryszard Tabaka’s "Incidental and Accidental. Between Determination and Coincidence"

Between Determination and Coincidence", which will take place on October 17th, 2018 at 19:00 at the Level 4 Gallery. Free invitations will be available at the Ticket office of the Philharmonic from October 12 from 13:00. The number of places is limited.
Both artists started their artistic activity in the era of analogue photography. Their experiments at the time were closely related to this and the technical restrictions. The transition to digital photography has been a breakthrough. One of the aims of the exhibition is to show how Leszek Szurkowski and Ryszard Tabaka go about these technologically different conditions, and how each of them takes advantage of new opportunities.
The exhibition also has an historical aspect, as it presents a fragment of the Polish history of contemporary art. Both Szurkowski and Tabaka left the country in 1981, and thus discontinued their work at the Foto Medium Art seminar. Each of them (Szurkowski in Canada, Tabaka in Australia) in their own way, adapting to a new environment, to new conditions, stayed faithful to their previous interests, resumed previous experiments and considerations related to them. Both for Tabaka and Szurkowski, it has had a positive and creative practical expression over the last few decades.
The title of this exhibition ‘Incidental and Accidental. Between Determination and Coincidence’ refers to two trends in the works of the presented artists. Tabaka's works are "reflecting reality" while purposefully using the medium of photography. With this, however, the area of planned intentions (artist's participation) ends, and the vast area of random interpretation in perceiving the object begins. Tabak's visualizations, through his apparent legibility with reference to painting and photography, provoke random associations in viewers. "Randomness" in Szurkowski's works, who treats photography as a "visual note", manifests itself mainly in the selection of fragments from which his photographs are made. Through a combination of thematically diverse photographs, the effects of these preparations should be called collages. In many cases, it is possible to find the intended allusions and sublime quotes, relating, for example, to the world of advertising, metropolitan graffiti or architecture.
Ryszard Tabaka was born in 1948 in Łódź, and in 1982 he emigrated permanently to Australia. He was a former member of ŁTF (Łódź Photography Club) and ZPAF (Association of Polish Art Photographers). From 1970-1976 he actively presented his works at collective and individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad. From 1977-1981, he consistently presented his artistic program entitled ‘Beyond Form’ in a series of individual and group presentations using photography film and installation as a means of expression. He was deeply involved in the Foto-Medium-Art activity as well as in a series of artistic seminars. In his works he focuses on the analysis of relationships between visual presentation and individual perception at both conscious and subconscious levels.
Leszek Szurkowski was born in 1949 in Poznań. He graduated from the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Agriculture in Poznań in 1973 and defended his PhD and habilitation in photography and multimedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. He deals with photography, utility graphics, photo-illustration and consultations in the field of visual communication and media. He specializes in the design of books and printed materials, exhibitions, as well as projects in the field of visual communication and education. In 1982, he founded the LES INC studio in Canada, which operates in the field of photography, multimedia, graphic design and strategic management of creative projects. In the period 1965-2018 he has realized over 60 individual exhibitions and participated in over 150 national and international group exhibitions, presenting his works, lecturing, and sitting on the jury.
