Daniel Smith’s passion for music is boundless. He is the only conductor to have been awarded laureate status in four major international conducting competitions, including the UNESCO Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conducting Competition, where he also received the Golden Baton and the Orchestra Prize, as well as the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition. He became the first Australian to conduct the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and was subsequently featured by TIME International. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.
On the symphonic podium, Smith is admired for his clarity of structure, rhythmic precision, and refined orchestral colour. He has appeared as a guest conductor with leading ensembles including the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the New Japan Philharmonic.
He has also conducted at major festivals such as the Mozarteum Festspiele, the Estate Musicale Chigiana in Siena, the Aspen Music Festival and the Stars of the White Nights Festival.
A prizewinner of the Mancinelli International Opera Conducting Competition, Smith has developed a particular expertise in the Italian operatic tradition, drawing on five years of collaboration with Franco Zeffirelli and Alberto Zedda. In Poland, he has worked with Wrocław Opera. His operatic engagements have also included appearances at the Rossini Opera Festival, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro di San Carlo, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Greek National Opera and Opera Australia, including productions by Damiano Michieletto.
World and national premieres conducted by Smith include Alfredo Casella’s Symphony No. 2, Bedřich Smetana’s Má vlast in a new critical edition, Giorgio Battistelli’s Ötzi, Fazıl Say’s Flute Concerto and John Adams’ Violin Concerto.
A distinctive aspect of Smith’s artistic activity is his long-standing association with Niccolò Paganini in Genoa. This includes season-opening gala performances as well as performances of Paganini’s violin concertos on the composer’s own legendary instrument, Il Cannone.
Having lived in Italy for more than two decades, Smith studied at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. He also pursued studies at Trinity College London, the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen.
A frequent presence on prime-time television, Smith combines his media work with educational initiatives designed for young musicians and audiences discovering classical music for the first time.
Widely regarded in Italy as an Ambassador of Australian Culture, Daniel Smith actively promotes Australian and Indigenous music through his long-standing collaboration with didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton. He is also the founder of The Daniel Smith Gift of Music Foundation, which provides concert access to people facing financial hardship or barriers to cultural participation.
