
Wojtek Gierlach, bass, graduated
Magna cum Laude from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where he studied with Professor Kazimierz Pustelak. He is a prizewinner of numerous international vocal competitions.
Among the highlights of his recent seasons are appearances as Osmin in
Die Entführung aus dem Serail at ABAO Bilbao, Melisso in
Alcina at Los Angeles Opera, Procida in
I vespri siciliani at Opera Bergen, and Claudio in
Agrippina at the Národní divadlo Brno.
In the 2017/18 season, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London as the Priest in Shostakovich’s
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
Further international successes include his debuts at the Royal Danish Opera and Welsh National Opera as Sir Giorgio in Bellini’s
I puritani under Carlo Rizzi, as well as performances as Melisso in Handel’s
Alcina, alongside Joyce DiDonato and The English Concert under Harry Bicket, at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and Theater an der Wien.
He has also appeared as Don Basilio in
Il barbiere di Siviglia at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oroveso in
Norma at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Assur in
Semiramide at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Alidoro in
La Cenerentola at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Melisso in
Alcina at Opéra National de Bordeaux, Orbazzano in
Tancredi at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Talbot in
Maria Stuarda at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and Count Rodolfo in
La sonnambula and Rocco in
Fidelio at Theater St. Gallen.
At the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, his roles have included Sarastro in
Die Zauberflöte, Duke Alfonso in
Lucrezia Borgia, Raimondo in
Lucia di Lammermoor, Zbigniew in
The Haunted Manor, Figaro in
Le nozze di Figaro, Escamillo in
Carmen, Gessler in
Guillaume Tell, Talbot in
Maria Stuarda, and Sparafucile in
Rigoletto.
Wojtek Gierlach is also a highly regarded concert and oratorio performer. His repertoire includes Dvořák’s
Stabat Mater with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Verdi’s
Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven’s
Symphony No. 9 with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Bach’s
Magnificat with the Orquesta Nacional de España, and Beethoven’s
Missa solemnis with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
