Philharmonic's Musicians at Walerian Pawłowski Square

Every September, concerts held at Walerian Pawłowski Square in the leafy Pogodno district of Szczecin become a cherished tradition. Thanks to the efforts of the Pogodno District Council, the city honoured the memory of this remarkable figure by naming the square after him. For nearly two decades, the Szczecin Philharmonic has continued this tribute through an annual open-air concert, celebrating one of the institution's most influential personalities.

A Sunday afternoon is the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors, rediscover the legacy of Walerian Pawłowski and enjoy a performance by musicians of the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra. This year's programme has been designed for audiences of all ages, offering a lively musical journey through film music, classical favourites and popular hits.

The programme features unforgettable themes from Star Wars and Indiana Jones by John Williams, excerpts from Gustav Holst's The Planets, as well as timeless songs made famous by Queen, Europe, Deep Purple, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Céline Dion, Survivor, The White Stripes and Imagine Dragons.

The Patron of Pogodno's September Concerts

Walerian Pawłowski was an extraordinary figure in Szczecin's musical life. A conductor, composer, writer, columnist, lecturer and educator, he devoted decades to sharing his passion for music. From 1954 until his death in 2004, he was closely associated with the Szczecin Philharmonic as a conductor, artistic adviser, author of insightful programme notes and presenter of educational concerts that introduced generations of residents to classical music.

In 2020, the Philharmonic published The Music Lover's Guide, or Maestro Walerian's Art of Digression, the final book based on his unfinished manuscript and personal notes.

Walerian Pawłowski passed away in 2004. In recognition of his contribution to the city's cultural life, Szczecin named the square in his beloved Pogodno district in his honour-a place where he lived for many years and was often seen walking with his dachshund.
