Project #1884 is a unique cultural undertaking that combines modern technologies with the rich history of Szczecin. Its aim is to bring the residents of the region closer to the common Polish-German past, symbolized by the former Konzerthaus – a place where art and social life flourished in pre-war Szczecin. Today, the modern building of the Szczecin Philharmonic is located here, but its foundations reach where the foundations of the Konzerthaus once reached. Both institutions had a similar profile of activity – organizing classical music concerts. The contemporary Szczecin Philharmonic literally grows out of the former Konzerthaus. But this project also has a deeply symbolic dimension. The musical heart of both the old and modern Szczecin and the region beat here and still beats here, and music as a universal language, knowing no divisions or borders, is a factor that connects people. In this context, the Philharmonic is a bridge not only between history and modernity, but also between the current residents of both the city and the region divided by the border.
Thanks to the use of 3D mapping technology, archival photos and the involvement of experts, the project offers an extraordinary story about the transformation of this place over the course of 140 years. The key element is the accompanying events, such as the reconstruction of the inaugural concert of the Konzerthaus from 1884 and the Polish-German debate on the role of this place in culture.
As many as 5 partner institutions were invited to cooperate on the project. The Philharmonic has already cooperated with two of them on Polish-German initiatives, namely the Dominican Monastery in Prenzlau and Musikverein Pasewalk. Three institutions joined the cross-border cooperation on the occasion of this project, namely: the Hanseatic City of Anklam, Tourismusverein Preznlau e.V. and Kulturverein Die Brucke e.V. Schwedt (Oder). The event has a cross-border character, involving both the residents of Szczecin and guests from the German part of the Euroregion Pomerania. The project not only reminds us of our common heritage, but also promotes intercultural integration and cooperation, opening up new perspectives for contemporary inhabitants of the region on both sides of the border.
