Josep Caballé Domenech
Chief Conductor of the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra since 2018 and Laureate Conductor of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra after a tenure of 12 years as a Music Director, he was General Music Director of the Oper and Staatskapelle Halle from 2013 to 2018, Artistic Director of the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden between 2005 and 2007.As a guest conductor, Caballé Domenech has led a prominent list of orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, with which he recorded Respighi’s Roman Trilogy on Onyx Classics, BBC Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Hr-Sinfonieorchester, Bayerischen Rundfunk, Bamberg Symphony, WDR Sinfonieorchester, DSO Berlin, Czech Philharmonic, RSO Wien, Belgian National Symphony, La Verdi Milano, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic and the Symphony Orchestras of Baltimore, Houston, San Antonio, Tucson, Fort Worth, and Sichuan, among others. He has conducted all of Spain’s main orchestras.
Renowned for his career in the operatic field, Caballé Domenech made his debut at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, where he also conducted the company at the Savonlinna Festival and La Fenice Festival in Venice. Additionally, he has led productions at the Staatsoper Berlin, Hamburg Staatsoper, State Opera Stuttgart, Dresden Semperoper, Theater an der Wien, Volksoper in Vienna, Komische Oper in Berlin, Aalto Theater in Essen, Capitol du Toulouse, Theater Royal du Versailles, San Carlo di Napoli, ABAO-Bilbao Opera, Sao Carlos Theater in Lisbon and the Beijing National Opera.
Opera highlights include Luisa Fernanda at the Theater an der Wien, a Tosca premiere at the Volksoper in Vienna, the world premiere of La Cabeza del Bautista at the Gran Teatro del Liceu, Wagner’s Ring, Flying Dutchman, Aida, Tosca, Adriana Lecouvreur and Sweeney Todd at the Oper Halle, Fanciulla del West, Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana at the Hamburg Staatsoper, Salomé and Rosenkavalier at the Teatro Mayor in Bogotá, Carmen in Puerto Rico (Festival Casals), Ariadne auf Naxos at Teatro Colón in Bogotá and Lohengrin at Oper Dortmund.
Recent engagements include appearances with the Dresdner Festspiel Orchestra at the 7th Classic OpenAir Dresden, a CD release for SONY with Jan Vogler and the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra featuring the Lalo and Casals concertos, a Plácido Domingo Gala at the Stone & Music Festival at the Roman Theater in Mérida, and performances with the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra at the Berlin Konzerthaus Young Euroclassic and Kulturpalast Dresden, as well as at the ClassicAnd Festival in Andorra.
He has also made debuts with the Niederrheinischer Symphoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester der Hansestadt Lübeck, MDR Leipzig, the Memphis and Portland Symphonies, as well as returning to lead the Dortmund Philharmoniker in a revival of Lohengrin. Other recent engagements include the George Enescu Philharmonic Bucharest, Principado of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, RTVE, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as a jury member at the International German Piano Award in the Alte Oper Frankfurt.
Josep Caballé-Domenech was awarded the Aspen Prize by the American Academy of Conducting at AMFS and selected as “Protégé” in the inaugural cycle of the Sir Colin Davis’ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative 2002-03.
