The Swedish double bassist, cellist, composer, and producer blends jazz with elements of classical music and folk in his work. His playing is characterized by exceptional melodicism, fluidity, and lyricism – a result of combining classical training with jazz improvisation.
His talent quickly earned him international recognition as a sideman. He has collaborated with jazz legends such as John Scofield, the Brecker Brothers, Jack DeJohnette, and Trilok Gurtu. Nevertheless, Danielsson has always strived for creative independence, becoming one of the few bassists to achieve success as a bandleader. For nearly 20 years, he led his all-star quartet with saxophonist David Liebman, pianist Bobo Stenson, and drummer Jon Christensen, a group that cemented his reputation as one of Europe's leading jazz musicians.
Danielsson is known for the diversity of his projects. His debut album "Libera Me" from 2004 showcased his mastery of orchestral jazz, while "Mélange Bleu" from 2006 surprised listeners with its modern electronic elements. The albums "Pasodoble" and "Tarantella", recorded in a duo and quartet with Polish pianist Leszek Możdżer, hold a special place in his discography. These projects, which fuse jazz with classical music, achieved gold and platinum status.
Danielsson is also a composer and arranger, working with symphony orchestras, and his project "Blauklang" was nominated for a Grammy Award. He also collaborates with his wife, vocalist Cæcilie Norby, and with trumpeter Paolo Fresu, with whom he recorded the album "Summerwind" – yet another testament to his versatility and talent.
