Soloist | Bartek Otocki

Vernissage
level 4. Gallery
Solo Exhibition
Curator: Katarzyna Szeszycka
Soloist, presented at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin, explores the experience of solitude inherent in the creative act. Its title refers to the figure of the solo musician standing before the orchestra – surrounded by dozens of performers, yet experiencing an intense sense of isolation. In the moment of performance, responsibility is not dispersed among the ensemble; it is concentrated in a single individual. The painter experiences a similar tension. The creative process may be prolonged, dialogical, and filled with uncertainty, yet the moment when the work is presented resembles stepping onto a stage. The painting leaves the privacy of the studio and begins an independent existence – like a solo part set against a silent space. Painting often resembles musical improvisation. Chance is not the absence of control but a deliberately cultivated possibility. Structure exists, yet it does not determine everything.

Rather than illustrating music, the project investigates a condition shared across artistic disciplines: the moment when the creator stands alone before their own decisions, alone before the gaze of the viewer, alone before the silence that precedes every response. Soloist is a reflection on concentration, the power of a single gesture, and the fragility of the moment when a private creative process becomes a public experience.
