Slevin Aaron’s photographic series Flowers is built around a recurring formal device: the faces of his subjects are replaced by elaborate floral arrangements. This repeated motif becomes the organising principle of the entire body of work. Aaron employs soft, painterly light and meticulously balanced compositions, allowing the photographs to exist somewhere between portraiture, staged photography, and images with an almost painterly quality. Yet their aesthetic appeal serves a purpose beyond decoration -it becomes a means of creating tension between what is visible and what remains concealed.
By replacing faces with flowers, the artist removes any fixed sense of identity from his subjects, leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation. The floral arrangements may be understood as masks, forms of protection, or attempts to conceal what is most vulnerable and personal. At the same time, they become symbols of a beauty inseparable from transience.
Although rich in colour and refined in form, the photographs maintain a restrained atmosphere.
