Quo vadis?

We would like to share a personal reflection with you. Whenever we experience works of such monumental scale in our Philharmonic, we feel as though the vast Golden Hall is transformed into an extraordinary temple in which a great mystery unfolds. The power of the music and the radiance of the golden interior seem perfectly matched. In the case of Quo Vadis?, we can almost see the burning city of Rome, the gleaming armour of the Praetorian guards, and, on the other hand, the fervour of faithful hearts, and a story that has been depicted for decades in breathtaking scenes.

Feliks Nowowiejski’s oratorio Quo Vadis? is one of the most spectacular and moving works in the history of Polish music-a composition that combines monumental grandeur with profound spiritual depth. Inspired by Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel and composed in 1903, it transports us to ancient Rome, where two worlds collide: the power of the Roman Empire and the emerging force of Christianity. In Nowowiejski’s hands, this dramatic narrative is transformed into music of extraordinary intensity and vividness.

From its very first bars, the work impresses with the sheer power of its sound. A vast orchestra, an expanded choir, solo vocal parts, and organ combine to create an immense musical fresco. The composer masterfully employs contrast, moving from brutal, almost apocalyptic visions of a city in flames to moments of intimate reflection and spiritual consolation in the Christian scenes. Particularly striking are the choral passages – rich in expression yet deeply rooted in the tradition of sacred music, evoking both Gregorian chant and the grandeur of Renaissance polyphony.

It is precisely this ability to unite tradition with Romantic splendour that makes Quo Vadis? a timeless work. Drawing inspiration from composers as diverse as Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler, Nowowiejski developed a distinctive and recognisable musical language of his own. It is no surprise that the work achieved extraordinary international success. Performed in major concert halls throughout Europe and the Americas, it moved audiences through its expressive power and universal message. To this day, it remains one of the greatest achievements of Polish music – a work that, after the music of Fryderyk Chopin, may have gained the widest international recognition.
